Jean Moulin

(1899 – 1943)

"I didn’t know it was so simple to do one’s duty

when one is in danger"

Jean Moulin was a high-profile member of the French Resistance during World War II.
He is remembered today as an emblem of the Resistance primarily because of his role in unifying the French Resistance and his courage and death in the hands of the Germans.

He was born in Béziers on June, 20^th 1899. He joined the French army in 1918.

Moulin was not only a Resistance fighter and a civil servant but an artist too. He’d been a political cartoonist for the newspaper Le Rire (under the pseudonym Romanin), as well as an illustrator for Poet Tristan Corbière’s books.

As the main Resistance leader, Moulin’s work involved meeting local resistance leaders across the country. He worked with General De Gaulle who entrusted him many important missions.

He was arrested on June, 21^st 1943 by the Gestapo of Klaus Barbie at Caluire, near Lyon.
The president of the National Council of the Resistance (CNR) died during his transfer to Germany.
According to the official thesis, he died at Metz after being tortured. Despite the brutality of the different interrogations, he never revealed any information about the action of the CNR.

His ashes were transferred to the Pantheon in 1964.

Why choosing Jean Moulin?

One can admire Jean Moulin for his courage, and his determination to fight for France. He was imprisoned and tortured by the Nazis but he never revealed anything.

Jean Moulin represents fundamental values such as freedom, courage, resistance, integrity and he is a model for humanity.

On a European scale, Jean Moulin was a major figure during World War Two because he was the leader of the French Resistance, which played a vital part in aiding the Allies to success in Western Europe.

Marie Curie

Marie Skłodowska Curie (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) was a Polish-born French physicist and chemist famous for her work on radioactivity. She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity and the first person honored with two Nobel Prizes —in physics and chemistry. She was also the first female professor at the University of Paris.

She was born Maria Skłodowska in Warsaw (then in Vistula Land, Russian Empire; now in Poland) and lived there until she was twenty-four. In 1891, she followed her older sister Bronisława to study in Paris, where she obtained her higher degrees and conducted her subsequent scientific work.

Marie Curie founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw. Her husband Pierre Curie shared her Nobel prize in physics. She was the sole winner of the 1911 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and she is the only woman who won the award in two different fields.

Her achievements include the creation of a theory of radioactivity, techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium. Under her direction, the world's first studies were conducted into the treatment of neoplasms (cancers) using radioactive isotopes.

While an actively loyal French citizen, Marie Curie never lost her sense of Polish identity. She named the first new chemical element that she discovered polonium (1898) for her native country, and in 1932 she founded a Radium Institute (now the Maria Skłodowska–Curie Institute of Oncology) in her home town, Warsaw, headed by her physician sister Bronisława.

Why choosing Marie Curie?

We think this woman was very important because she discovered radium and polonium.

She’s one of the symbols of the European Union because she was Polish and she died in France after a life of research in Chemistry and Physics. Her husband was French.

Aristide Briand

(1862 - 1932)

Aristide Briand was a French statesman who served eleven terms as Prime Minister of France during the French Third Republic and received the 1926 Nobel Peace Prize.

He was born on the 28 of March 1862 in Nantes from a bourgeois family. He studied law at the Lycée de Nantes and became a famous statesman who served as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister during the French Third Republic.

Aristide Briand received the 1926 Nobel Peace Prize together with Gustav Stresemann of Germany for the Locarno Treaties in which the First World War Western European Allied powers and the new states of central and Eastern Europe sought to return normalizing relations with defeated Germany.

Aristide Briand was the first to propose a union of European nations, in a speech delivered during a conference of the League of Nations on the 5th of September 1929. Then, in 1930, he wrote his « Memorandum on the Organization of a Regime of European Federal Union » for the Government of France, becoming the first European government formally to adopt the principle.

Why choosing Aristide Briand?

Aristide Briand was a forerunner with a pacifist approach of the problems of his time.

He is one of the fathers of the European Union.

He made a great step in the direction of our actual Democracy and Republic.

FRANCE

In this city, in 804, Charlemagne received Pope Leo III.
Clovis I was baptized in this city between 496 and 499 AD by bishop Saint Remy.
The Cathedral of this city was completed by the end of the 15th century and was registered in the UNESCO heritage in 1991.
Charles X was the last French king who was crowned in this city, on May 29, 1825.
In 1000, the archbishop of this city, Gerbert d'Aurillac, was elected as Pope Sylvester II.

BULGARIA

There is a hill called Tsarevets (the King’s hill) in this city.
It is the town, where in 1185, Assen and Peter announced the end of the Byzantine oppression of Bulgaria.
The town was the capital of the second Bulgarian Kingdom (1187-1393).
Where was the Great National Assembly of Bulgaria summoned?

NORWAY

One of the most famous battles in Norwegian history.
The main character in the battle was?
This happened in Trøndelag county, but which Municipality was it in?

POLAND

The next stop is the largest city in the Northern part of Poland. It is the place where a political movement called 'Solidarity' was founded.
It is also the birthplace of the present Polish Prime Minister - Donald Tusk.
The most relevant character in Polish history, connected with the city, is a well-known Polish politician who was the co-founder of 'Solidarity' as well as a human-rights activist. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983.
You can find his statue in London's wax museum - Madame Tussauds.

CZECH REPUBLIC

- a small city in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic

- is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

- construction of the town and castle began in the late 13th century

- the castle complex is unusually large for a town's size; within the Czech Republic it is second in extent only to the Hradčany castle complex of Prague

- about 30 km from the town is the Hluboka Castle, established in the twelfth century and later remodelled in imitation of Windsor Castle

BELGIUM

1) An important Flemish town for the textile industry; during the 19th century there were many social problems, people were living in miserable circumstances. A famous priest tried to help the suffering population by means of politics.

2) The nickname of the inhabitants of this town refers to a kind of vegetables.

3) Birthplace of this well-known author who wrote a successful novel with typical characters such as the bold Ondineke, Tippetotje, Mossieu Colson working in a ministry…

4) Every year the carnival parade attracts many lookers-on.

5) The town is also known for its numerous (Dutch) gin distilleries.

Poland

This painter was one of the most famous painters of Polish Symbolism.

In his creativity he successfully joined the predominant style of his times with motifs of Polish martyrdom.

His father was General Secretary of the Land Credit Society and his mother was daughter of Alexander – an officer in Napoleon’s army.

When he was seventeen he moved to this city where he was a free student of the School of Fine Arts, then (at the request of Jan Matejko) left school and studied only in the SSP.

In 1897 he was one of the founders of the Association of Polish Artists ‘Sztuka’.

His most famous paintings are ‘Wigilia na Syberii’ (‘Christmas Eve in Siberia’), ‘Błedne koło’ (‘Vicious circle’), and ‘Melancholia’ (‘Melancholy’).

Trip to Czech Republic

From November 3 to November 8, four students and two teachers went to Nymburk in the Czech Republic to visit European partners.

It was a wonderful trip with a very-well organized program! Thanks to all of the students and teachers who welcomed the French team warmly!

Visit of the Musem of Fine Arts in Lyon

On the 6th of October, the 1L1 Students went to Lyon to visit the museum of Fine Arts.

The purpose of this visit was to help them find inspiration for the next task they have to perform, that is making six art works that will be sent or added to our partners' art works.

In each country, the students have to use the style and / or the techniques of a famous native artist to create their series of works.

In the morning, they took part in a workshop that enabled them to understand how carefully artists build their works.

In the afternoon, they had the time to visit the museum and admire the works of famous French and international painters and sculptors.They were surprised to see some of the paintings they studied in English class...

Stop n°3 : ART

Belgium

1. From the second of June 2009 onwards, Godfried Van Bouillon saw a box with an apple on his left hand side .

2. It’s always cloudy in his fantasy, just like in Belgium.

3. I hide a lot of things in my paintings & my name is hidden in following acronym: I am Gert Néret.

4. The chemical symbol ‘Fe’ lies not far from where I expose right now.

Bulgaria

1. Born on 31 March 1885 in Vidin, Bulgaria, he was one of the most distinguished painters of the 20th century. Born in a Bulgarian Jewish household, he lived in Bucharest, studied in Vienna and Munich, spent most of his conscious life in Paris, acquired an American citizenship, and travelled all around the world. Perhaps the most accurate definition of his persona would be "a cosmopolitan".

2. This artist was one of the biggest bohemians of his time, a friend of Amedeo Modiliyani , Ernest Hemingway , Picasso and Georges Papazov.

3. He was one of the most prominent figures of the artistic circle of Montparnasse and even received the nickname" Prince of Montparnasse ".

Norway

1. This stop is one of Norway’s most famous fjords.

2. Two of our best known romantic painters painted this picture from the fjord:

3. The two painters cooperated painting, with one of them painting the landscape and the other the figures.

4. This summer the fjord has been in the midst of a controversy between the government and environmental organizations, because of a plan of building pylons through the landscape.

5. The fjord is situated between Bergen and Stavanger.

Treasure Hunt Part Three

What do you know about the treasure hunt in our project? Do you know the names of the cities that were chosen by the French students and by our European partners last year? Where can you find them?

Now it is your turn to take part in the Treasure Hunt!

Task 1

1. Choose a place in France famous for Arts,

2. Write a riddle composed of 5 different clues (from the most mysterious to the most obvious one),

3. Add photos to illustrate your riddle.

Task 2

Together with your classmates, vote for the best riddle. You will send it to our European partners in a few days!

Task 3

You will discover the riddles from our European partners in a few days too.

43 students answered the questionnaire.

Communication, collaboration and activities

About communication between pupils, 40 percent think that there is good communication and 40 percent think it is average.

1 in 3 students feel they are more and more involved but 40 percent think it is not enough.

Concerning the communication tools, students love sending emails to their European classmates as half of them think it is useful.

Then, some of the most popular are NING (48%) and Face book (33%) whereas the eTwinning platform and Sky are not very useful according to the students (45% and 48%)

On the whole, the story was written by students exclusively as 55 percent of the students answered that it was written by small groups and 21 percent answered it was written by large numbers of students.

As to collaboration when writing the story and the lyrics of the European anthem, more than 60 percent of the students think there was good collaboration for each production.

However, most students think that the productions didn't enable them get more involved. And only about 30 percent liked writing the lyrics.

Meeting in France

Most students who went to France were volunteers to come. Some of them had gotten in touch with each other before the meeting.

As to the benefits of the meeting in France, it is difficult to analyse the results. Maybe the question was not phrased correctly: "Did you enjoy your stay in France or did you enjoy accommodating a foreign student? Do you think it was an advantage?"

Yes: 19%

No: 29%

Other: 52%

But when students are asked if they have been satisfied with the programme in France, nearly all of them say they spent a very good moment: "Yes, it was brilliant… The programme at school was very interesting… I met very amazing people… I discovered French culture… The people in Aubenas were very nice…"

They also say that the meeting in France brought them interesting things such as speaking English with young people, making friends, discovering a new culture and new manners, improving their English…

Yet, most students didn't take part in one of the two meetings feel a little "abandonned". They would like to get more involved thanks to chat sessions or other ways of communication.

In France, the 2de7 pupils were in charge of the clues describing a French city connected with music. They have done a good job!

take the waters.

5. This city has given its name to a mineral water.

By the 22nd of March, each school has to publish some clues for the second stop. This time we will look for European places in connection with music.

Common Story

The writing of the story is achieved!

Objective

Together, all countries write a European story. Each country sends six elements (from 2 narratives from their national literature) to another country, which writes a specific part of the story based on three of these elements, sends their text to another country and adds a list of six elements of its own literature. Each part of the text consists in 150 to 200 words.

Belgium: exposition (with 3 of the elements sent by Bulgaria by 15/1); published by 22/1
Czech Republic: rising actions; published by 5/2
France: climax; published by 12/2
Norway: falling action; published by 19/2
Poland: twist of action; published by 26/2

The story

Belgium: exposition

Once upon a time there was a very, very, very frightening snake. He had a green skin and was so huge... He also had shiny teeth. It was just as if he bleached them from time to time. His name was ‘Terry Fying’. He lived in a big dark cave called ‘The Yakobracave’. Everyday he looked up to watch the sky and each time, he saw the white swallow. Her name was Noëmie. She was as white as fresh snow and very pretty. She flew so high and in such a gallant way that the snake became very jealous because of her skilled way of flying. This made the snake suffer a lot. The pain was hardly unbearable. He wished that he could fly just like her, but as he was a snake, this was impossible.
There also was an eagle that lived in the biggest tree in the forest in a huge eyrie. His name was Aladdin. His feathers were dark and they shone in the sun. Aladdin had a strong spirit and he was brave because he had been through a lot of awful situations. The other birds excluded him because he came from a very far and unknown land in the east and because he was black.

Czech Republic: rising actions

   It was a sunny day. Alladin had been invited by Terry to the baptism of his new born baby. The eagle was looking forward to it but he was also very nervous because it was the first time he had been invited to such a ceremony.
    While he was flying to Terry's house he was thinking about it. All of a sudden something caught his attention. He looked down and saw a man in a yellow shirt, who was standing in a park. Aladdin immediately understood that the man was doing something bad. Aladdin saw him steal a woman's handbag and run to his den. The eagle didn't follow him for a long time, because he had to fly in a different direction, but he saw the robbers' den very well. It was a place where all the robbers lived together. He was shocked, because he hated crime and violence, but he couldn't do anything about it. He had to go on flying and couldn't be late.
    He tried to think about what he would do and say to Terry's family. He was very pleased to be invited and wanted to behave adequately. He found some advice he could give to the newborn child.

As he was approaching the snake's house, he suddenly heard a terrible cry. Something had happened. He rapidly landed and the first thing he saw was his friend, Terry. Aladdin thought that a terrible thing must have happened. Was the baby in danger?

Aladdin ran to the snake as fast as he could to ask him what had occured.

"My baby...", the snake sobbed, "is, is...dead... I don't know how it is possible. I went to see him when I woke up this morning… and he was… dead!" His voice was so low, nearly inaudible.

Aladdin was wordless. He felt very sad and sympathised with his friend.

"I don't know how I can live without my baby", Alladin said, desperate. "Maybe if I kill myself I'll meet him in heaven and then I might be a father to him"

"Please, don't do that.", the eagle answered gently. "I promise I'll help you to overcome your suffering."

France: climax

When he left Terry Fying's house, the Eagle saw the woman –whose bag had been stolen- again. She was with her two other sisters. Aladdin decided to go and speak to them.

"Hello!" he said from the sky. "From here I saw a man stealing your bag. Do you know what way he took?" The eagle asked.

"He went over there, behind the rampart, but it is inaccessible."

The eagle headed towards the place and he saw a piece of yellow fabric attached to the rampart. He was keeping on his way when he saw a den. And in the darkness, he caught sight of the robber. The terrifying shadow of the eagle scared him and he ran away. But Aladdin saw the old woman's bag. He picked it and brought it back to her.

The woman didn't know how to thank the eagle. Aladdin had an idea.
"Do you know how I could bring a dead snake back to life?"
"There is a prophecy… Take a swallow feather and pronounce the following magic words:

'May your rest be infinite

And your sorrows alleviated

May the world filled with happiness…"

Norway: falling action
All night Aladdin had been thinking of the prophecy given by the three sisters. He needed a swallow feather, but how was he going to get that? Just as he was about to fall a sleep, still wondering where the feather could be, a bright light appeared in the end of the room. Aladdin bounced up and rubbed his eyes. A fairy with a beautiful, pink, sparkling dress and big blond hair glanced at Aladdin and smiled from one ear to the other. “I'm the good fairy Ullrikke and I am here to help you to find what you seek. Fly into the forest, and you will find what you need.” The fairy danced her way out of the window, and Aladdin the eagle fell asleep.

Early in the morning Aladdin went for a flight in the forest, looking for something that could help him. After flying for a long, long time he saw a small green thing running on the ground. Aladdin went down to see what it was, and it was an elf. She was crying and sobbing her eyes out, and finally Aladdin managed to understand that she was lost in the labyrinth. Aladdin said he would help her, and maybe she knew something about the swallow’s feather? “Yes, yes”, she said, “go far into the woods, and look for a castle. The three witches live there, and they will give you what you need to catch this swallow.” After letting the elf down outside the labyrinth, he continued to the forest.

He started to get very tired when he saw the big castle that the elf had told him about. The castle was very dark and scary. He knocked on the door three times, and the woman who got her handbag stolen opened up. She invited Aladdin in for a cup of tea, and introduced him to her sisters. They told him that the only way of getting a swallow feather was to take it from the swallow when it was asleep. “Follow the sparkly road behind our castle, find the golden tree. That is where the swallow lives.” And Aladdin was on his way again.

Aladdin flew and flew, following the road. It was very easy to see it, since it was shining and sparkling a lot. He was still tired after all the flying so he went down to the ground to sit on a stump. All of a sudden a huge shadow came over him, and he was very scared. A purple dragon walked up to him. “You need to look for the feather in the labyrinth, not a tree. The three witches are evil, don't trust them! Here is what you need to do: go to the labyrinth in the end of the forest, find the swallow, and say to her “shimshallabom, shimshallabam” and repeat it three times while you use this amulet to hypnotize her.”

By now Aladdin was starting to get tired of all this magical whimsical things, but he did as the dragon said, and flew back to the labyrinth. After some circling above the ground, he spotted the swallow, sleeping in a hidden corner. He landed in front of her, and before she knew what was happening he had her hypnotized, and pulled out a beautiful, white feather.

Poland: twist of action
The Eagle took the feather in his beak and went on his way. It was night, but he wanted to see the snake as soon as possible. However, after a short time he came across a large group of giant and ugly trolls. Aladdin was afraid of trolls and he didn’t want to join them. So he had to choose a longer way around which led over the sea. He flew for a long time, but finally he saw a small island covered with ice. He wanted to rest there. However, when he approached the island, suddenly a storm unleashed. A terrifying figure appeared – it was a sea monster, Draugen. The Eagle heard his terrible laugh and after a moment all he felt was the cold. He fell deep into the abyss of the sea. He thought that that was his end, but something caught him. Before he could understand what was happening, he found himself on the edge of the island that he was looking for. “I’m King Valemon and I noticed that you had been caught by Draugen. Fortunately, I managed to help you,” said the white bear, his rescuer. Alladin was very grateful to him, but he soon remembered that he had to continue his flight. Suddenly, he realized that the swallow feather had disappeared.

Bulgaria: dénouement
(VERSION1)

“Oh, no. The feather. The monster took it away” – cried out Aladdin.

“I know who can help you finding it” – the rescuer said. “Up there” – he pointed a huge mountain, “above the clouds there is a cave”. There is a gigantic dragon living there all together with his rider – Prince Duke Popiel. They are terrible creatures; some people even say they are the devil itself. No one has ever survived after meeting them. But they keep a pure, innocent creature in captivity in the cave – the mermaid. She has magical voice – it can make everyone fall asleep but it can happen only under the water. If you set her free, she will help you but to defeat the Waweski dragon you have to kill his rider and master - Popiel."

Aladdin flew away. After some time he got into dark, rainy clouds and saw the cave. “That must be the place” – he said. He went inside and saw Popiel sleeping. Aladdin didn’t wait. He started nibbling his face and that woke him up. He jumped, caught him and broke his wing then he clapped twice his hands. The dragon appeared. Although the devastating pain, the eagle didn’t give up. He started nibbling him again. Then the dragon filled his mouth with fire and prepared to belch it upon Aladdin. But then suddenly the eagle moved away and the fire hit Popiel instead of him. The dragon burned his master down. Right after that he lost his powers. Aladdin released the mermaid and she was very thankful “what can I do for you?” she asked. The eagle told her about the feather. Right away she jumped in the water and the next thing he heard was a silent lullaby. He fell asleep.

“Wake up, wake up uncle Aladdin” – the little child said while tickling his nose with a little white feather. “It seems like you are having a nightmare.”

“Oh, I dreamed of being an eagle and I was trying to save you. I faced dragons, elves, mermaids and bears. But they don’t exist of course. But where is your father Terry?”

“He is preparing the dinner”.

“Great, I’m starving. What’s the meal today?”

“Mmm, it’s dragon meat.”

…”WHAT meat?!”

While Aladdin was traveling through the wood, a shadow chased him incessantly.

That was the shadow of the thief, who knew everything: Aladdin was looking for a feather from a white swallow to save the snake’s still-born baby. The thief heard the spell, too.

‘Let your rest be infinite and your pains relieved!’

He was looking for the same magical feather because his wife suffered an incurable illness.

A snake lay upon her and from that day on she pined away.

Passing through theYakobracave where the Wawelski Dragon lived, the thief overheard the conversation between Aladdin and Terry Fying and understood that the culprit for his wife’s illness was the evil Terry Fying. The thief sat on a stone speechlessly nearby the Vistula River, thinking of all he had seen and heard.

A beautiful river mermaid was watching him with curiosity. She started singing with a magical voice. Suddenly a strong wind began to blow, the branches of the trees swung away and a tiny swallow feather passed by the thief’s eyesight. At the same time Aladdin, who was flying round the wood saw the white feather and momentarily made a dash for it.

‘Why do you need that feather?’, inquired the eagle.

‘I need it to save my wife’, answered the thief.

‘I also need it to save Terry Fying’s child’.

Realizing the need of the feather’s magic power both of them decided to use its sorcery.

The thief told the eagle: ‘Go and fetch the snake and the child to the Wawelski dragon cave.

All got together, lay the white feather between the snake and the thief’s wife.

They pronounced the spell and oh, the miracle happened!

Terry Fying’s child was brought back to life. The woman rose from her bed and kissed her husband.

In that moment the wood was flooded with light. The mermaid’s song was getting louder and louder. All got intoxicated with joy and lived happily ever after.

Pupil Evaluation Report 1

Here is the report of the answers and informations given by the pupils involved in the Comenius project in the questionnaire.
On the whole, 62 students answered the questionnaire, pupils of the different classes involved in the project and pupils that took part in the trip in Sofia.

• 49 pupils consider that the communication between pupils is very good or good, and 40 of them think that the goals of the projects were clearly explained to them. Maybe some concrete details on the project, like the game approach and the different parts of the program should have been more clearly explained.

• The eTwinning portal and the NING Network are considered useless communication tools by the pupils. Emails and Facebook were indicated as the most useful tools (52 votes as “very useful” and “useful”), especially in order to communicate with pupils of the other countries.

• As for the logo, many different ways of creation were chosen in the different classes involved in the project: 17 of them indicated that a small group of pupils was in charge of the creation of the logo, 12 said “a large number of pupils” and 21 answered “pupils and teachers”. This part of the project seems to have been considered as great and resulting of an efficient collaboration between all the partners (45 answers)

• Concerning the boxes, 51 pupils answered that it was a good way to get involved in the project. The following answers about “their opinion” on this activity were not always clearly and completely given, with details and explanations :
31 said “I liked it very much because…” and the main explanation is about the great moments spent choosing the objects to send and discovering what the boxes contained. Some pupils also mention that it was a very good way to improve their English and to learn more about the cultures of foreign countries.
25 said “I like it but…” and 9 answered that they didn’t feel concerned or that they didn’t like it. Their explanations here are linked with the stay in Sofia that concerned only a few of them (lack of motivation), and also with the feeling that this activity was useless to know the pupils of the other countries. 2 pupils tell that they didn’t understand the meaning of all the objects.

MEETING IN BULGARIA (31 answers)

The pupils who traveled in Sofia enjoyed their stay in Bulgaria. Here is the summary of their answers:

• Concerning the way they were chosen to take part in the meeting in Sofia :
- 11 of them told they were chosen thanks to teachers’ choice (with cover letters or not)
- 6 answered “voluntary participation”, 15 “random drawing”, and 3 “lottery”
What about coordinating our selection measures?

• Only 15 of them got in touch with their hosts before going to Bulgaria mostly by mails or Facebook.
• All the pupils unfortunately didn’t answer to the 3 last questions : 15 told they enjoyed their stay in their Bulgarian families, 5 answered that they didn’t enjoy it (with no explanations).
• The program was well-organized for most of them: they appreciated to discover Sofia, the monastery of Rila and also their school activities.
• As a conclusion, most of them appreciated the discovery of a new culture, speaking English and meeting new friends…

Bulgaria

THE MYSTERY TOWN

You start from Sofia and travel to the north-east of Bulgaria. On your way you pass through the town of Veliko Turnovo. It is the second Bulgarian capital. The books written in the Turnovo literary school put the foundations of the contemporary Slavic literary language. The Old-Bulgarian book is hand-written and extremely precious with its miniatures (with multi-coloured compositions), the Tetraevangelia of Ivan Alexander known as the Gospel of London which still decorates the British National Museum as well as the chronicle of Manasii –kept in the Vatican.

Then you should pass through the town of Shoumen. The mystery town is located at about 20 km., south-east of the town of Shoumen.

The mystery town became the first Bulgarian capital during the reign of King Simeon. The first literary school was established at this place. The importance of its activity marked the beginning of the Golden Age in the cultural history of Bulgaria. Some of the most famous writers and teachers that worked there are Naum Preslavski, Chernorizets Hrabar and Joan Ekzarh.

Belgium

The popular detective series “Aspe” was filmed in this city. In the series, the charming police inspector Pieter Van In solves crimes and murders.

The successful series was based on the books of Pieter Aspe, who was born on 3rd April 1953 in this particular city.

Czech Republic

He had two wives. The first, Olga Šplíchalová died in 1996 and the second, Dagmar Veškrnová is czech actress.

When he was politician, he lived in castle in city, which is called “Town of hundred towers”.

Poland
The masterpiece which the poet is best renowned for is Treny (Laments). He wrote a series of elegies upon the death of his beloved little daughter.

Norway

This author received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920.

Bulgaria

This town was one of the former capitals of the first Bulgarian state on the Balkan Peninsula.

Belgium

The writer of this book, called ‘Het dolfijnenkind’ (‘The child of the dolphin’) was born in the mystery city.

When Marijn and her class visit a dolphinarium one day, something very strange happens. Without thinking about it, he dives in to the water and swims with the dolphins, as if he had always done that. When his mother finds out what happened, she tells Marijn a few things from the past, though it is very painful for her. Shortly after, they leave for the Bahamas, where Marijn was born, but where his father disappeared mysteriously. Their search for the truth can begin.

Czech Republic

He was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. His most famous pieces are: Letters to Olga and Garden Party.

Norway

His most famous work is “The Growth of the Soil”.This author received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920.

Poland
One of Polish best-known writers died there. The man was a Polish Renaissance poet.

Poland

It is also one of the oldest in our country. This city is famous for its beautiful Old Town.

1. Work in teams! 3 or 4 students working together is a good idea! Give a name to your team and say to your "Comenius" teachers that your team is taking part in the contest.

2. Draw a map of Europe with the six countries of our project.

3. Find out the 5 places thanks to the clues below and the others that will be posted in the next few days.

4. Each time you find out a place, locate it on your map.

5. Once you have found out the 5 places, PROCLAIM IT!

The winner is the team that has found the 5 places FIRST!

And of course, as for any good contest, there will be a reward, even two!

Start of the treasure hunt through Europe!

Concept: Each country sends riddles to find out one important place in connection with the tasks students have to perform.
The first place must be connected with literature as the students are to write a European tale.

On January 15, 2010, the first riddle is to be published.

Here are the details which were discussed in Bulgaria:

- Each country will choose a stop that has something to do with its national literature (in general). A map will be put in every school, on which the stops of the quest will be pointed out. These stops mustn’t necessarily have something to do with the 2 narratives.

- Clues will have to be given (3 to 5 questions or riddles). These clues will eventually be used in the party game. They can refer to a writer, whose picture can be put on the map. The clues mustn’t be too straightforward (the students must not be able to simply google the answer, they must be challenged to think about it). Several clues can be used to refer to one answer. The clues can also lie in the field of geography, history etc, as to help the students find the answer. In case the clues are too difficult, they can be passed to other students (from other class groups) as well.

- Each country will receive five clues (for five stops) from five countries. The clues can be divided among the students.

- Three to five clues, which are ranked according to difficulty. 2nd and 3rd clue will only be given if the other clues are too difficult. Teachers are free to decide to use this system or not. When the stop is found, a picture can be put on the map.
1st clue: difficult
2nd clue: easier
3rd clue: easy

BULGARIA
1. Why do the Bulgarians wear Martenitza? When do they start wearing it? What does it symbolize
The Bulgarians wear Martenitza (Baba Marta) because it's a tradition in Bulgaria since 681, representing the escape of the five children of a Bulgarian king. It's a red and white pompom. The red colour symbolizes life and passion, the white colour symbolizes purity and soul.
They start wearing it on March 1st and they keep it all month long. It's a way to symbolize a wish of good health.
Our answer: Martenitsa is a small piece of adornment made of white and red yarn, worn by people in the beginning of March starting on March 1st, a tradition of welcoming the spring. It symbolizes the belief of people that these two colours bring life and health.

2. What is the name of the statue located in the center of the Bulgarian capital city which symbolizes wisdom and glory and represents protector of the city? How does it look like?
The woman represented on the statue is Sofia, just as the name of the capital city. She holds in her hands the symbol of wisdom and knowledge. She is wearing the crown of Tjuhe. She is the goddess of the destiny.
Our answer: This is a 24-meter bronze statue of the goddess protector of our city, holding the symbols of wisdom and fame. Its name is St. Sofia. She is the mother of Faith, Hope and Love. We celebrate them on September 17th, the day of our city Sofia.
We don’t understand what Tjuhe means. The rest of the answer is correct.

3. Which is the biggest and most impressive eastern orthodox cathedral on the Balkan Peninsula? Why was it built?
The biggest Orthodox cathedral on the Balkan Peninsula is the cathedral Alexander Nevski. It was built between 1904 and 1912 to remind the Russian soldiers dead during the war between Russia and Ottoman Empire that led to the Bulgarian independence (1877/1878)
Our answer: It is Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and it is situated in the centre of Sofia. It is built in honour of the Russian soldiers, who died during the Russian-Turkish War in 1877-1878.

This famous Bulgarian product is called Rose Water.
Our answer: Bulgaria is one of the biggest producers of rose oil in the world. The secret is in the high quality of Bulgarian roses, a special type that has been cultivated in our country after many years of growing. The rose oil is called ”The liquid gold” of Bulgaria, because it is a very expensive product.
You are right that rose water is also produced form the roses but the most famous product is the rose oil. Good job!

The creator of Esperanto language lived in Poland. He was born in Bialystok and died in Varsovie.

BULGARIA
1. Why do the Bulgarians wear Martenitza? When do they start wearing it?What does it symbolize
The Bulgarians wear Martenitza (Baba Marta) because it's a tradition in Bulgaria since 681, representing the escape of the five children of a Bulgarian king. It's a red and white pompom. The red colour symbolizes life and passion, the white colour symbolizes purity and soul.
They start wearing it on March 1st and they keep it all month long. It's a way to symbolize a wish of good health.
2. What is the name of the statue located in the center of the Bulgarian capital city which symbolizes wisdom and glory and represents protector of the city? How does it look like?
The woman represented on the statue is Sofia, just as the name of the capital city. She holds in her hands the symbol of wisdom and knowledge. She is wearing the crown of Tjuhe. She is the godess of the destiny.
3. Which is the biggest and most impressive eastern orthodox cathedral on the Balkan peninsula? Why was it built?
The biggest Orthodox cathedral on the Balkan peninsula is the cathedral Alexander Nevski. It was built between 1904 and 1912 to remind the Russian soldiers dead during the war between Russia and Ottoman empire that led to the Bulgarian independence (1877/1878)

NORWAY

Back from Bulgaria !

Our first meeting with our European partners took place from Wesnesday, November 3rd to Monday, November 8th, in Sofia.

We met colleagues and other students from Poland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Norway and Bulgaria, of course. We have been warmly welcomed and have had some intensive working sessions about our common project, "The Quest for the European Grail". We also discovered the 88th Secondary school "Dimitar Popnikolov" in which we met and worked.

Special Thanks to our Bulgarian colleagues who organised this meeting with great professionalism.

On October, Thursday 22th, students of 1.L and 2.7 opened the first three boxes we received from Belgium, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. What a great moment!

In early November, 4 students and 3 teachers from Marcel Gimond will go to Sofia, Bulgaria for the first work meeting of the project:

News about the boxes to be sent to our European partners...

On Monday, October 12th, we will be ready to send the boxes with the five objects representing France to our European partners!

Those items have been chosen by both classes (Première L and Seconde 7) after great debates to determine a common selection. Many ideas, as original or funny as they can be, were mentionned.

We all hope that it will not be too easy for the other countries to identify France with this selection...

To keep the secret on the content of the boxes as long as possible for our European partners , we will publish the five items chosen later on this blog!

Creation of the logo of the project

Tuesday, September 11th

One of the tasks we have to perform with the other European partners is creating a logo for our project. We'll use it on websites and blogs and on all of the documents we'll create.

Today, the 1L students start designing the French part of the logo.

The logo should include:

- the European dimension

- the French dimension

It should also represent:

- Marcel Gimond High School

- the classes taking part in the project (2de7 and 1L1)

- the topic of our project

The students are free to add what they would like to reveal about themselves: personnalities, town, environment, etc.

Tuesday, September 18th

Today, after negotiations, we finally chose one logo designed by Nolwen and Vanille (1L1).

It represents a frog with a beret and the Graal in one hand. It is sitting on a chestnust tree leaf. In the background, there is the blue sky with 6 shining European stars.

The frog is wearing a T-shirt on which one can read "I love EU" and Marcel Gimond is written on its beret.

How funny it is!

We are very happy to inform you that our project has been selected!

We are about to launch it in Marcel Gimond Highschool.

Two classes have been selected this year: 2de7 and 1L1.
The students of these two classes will work together and share the different tasks they will be asked to perform.

Three of them will go to Bulgaria with the team of teachers in November!

Preparatory vist in Belgium

We were two teachers from Marcel Gimond High School to go to Poperinge, Belgium, for five days.

The goal of the visit was to co-write the whole project and fill in the application form to send it to our respective European agencies.

We worked a lot, of course, but we also enjoyed ourselves. We visited the area and the hop museum in Poperinge, played typical games and shared wonderful meals with our colleagues.

We met very welcoming people too! Thanks to all of them :-)

D Day

Today is a great day! We are about to send our application form...

After five days of intensive work in Belgium, the new version of our project was born.

Whatever may happen, it was a wonderful experience for all of us and we shared very friendly moments :-)
